Why sport in primary school is important
Primary school sport gives the children an opportunity to be active which has many benefits on physical, social and mental health. We love encouraging children to be active and have some fun, some children can struggle with classroom based activities but really excel when it comes to PE.
Its our job to deliver active and engaging lessons where the children will learn many skills. Being active is of course good for your physical attributes which will keep you healthier and stronger but it’s also proven to help with mental states such as depression and anxiety, with the effects of lockdown unfortunately mental health cases has risen in primary aged children which is why physical health is as important as ever. The time we spend with the 1000’s of children we teach each week is so important, sport can be a real way out which is why we love what we do. Children will play a range of different sports, some are individual and some are team games which is great for teamwork. We cover at least 6 a year from handball, hockey, athletics, cricket, football, tag rugby, dance, gymnastics, yoga, the list goes on.
But we don’t just stop there, our extra-curricular clubs are another opportunity for children to stay active. We also arrange fixtures and competitions outside of school time, this gives the opportunity to showcase skills that have been learnt and compete against other children from different primary schools. For a lot children there first taste of competitiveness can be through primary school sport and it’s not just for the gifted and talented, all children are offered the opportunity to represent, from my experience all I see is beaming smiles from the children who thoroughly enjoy the competitive side, the opportunity for them to showcase something they are good gives the children a real sense of empowerment . Of course it’s not the winning that counts it’s the taking part but it’s an amazing feeling when the school or individual has won and you have had a part to play. Many will thrive in secondary school and beyond from foundations that have been laid in primary school through sport.
